This is a totally flexible online course that you complete at your own pace, on your schedule without penalty if life throws curve balls your way! 
I’ll guide you through everything from modern upholstery and sewing basics to advanced techniques like deep and square buttoning. This course goes out live via Zoom each Wednesday at 11.00GMT, giving you the chance to join. This is perfect if you want to engage with me each week, ask questions and keep accountable.  Watch as I complete each module and with up to four different camera angles, you will never miss a single snip or staple! 
Then, it’s your turn; using the provided kits, you will embrace your passion and transform it into real products. 
Across seven practical modules, you’ll get hands-on experience creating footstools and headboards—projects that not only build your confidence but also give you beautiful pieces to enjoy in your own home or a portfolio to start your new career.

Whilst this course is taught online, we'd love an opportunity to meet you in-person and get to know you and your goals for upholstery. If you are able to, we will invite you to attend a one-day in-person induction with us at our studio. Our studio is located in New Mills, Derbyshire in the heart of the Peak District in a beautiful Grade II listed former cotton mill. You can attend on any Thursday, Friday or Saturday (availability dependent) and the day will be an action-packed, relaxed and fun introduction to all things upholstery during which you will complete Module 1: The Drop in Seat as well as:

  • This course is designed in such a way that you will absolutely nail the basics of upholstery through seven practical makes plus three additional theory modules. The projects have been chosen to maximise your learning experience whilst providing you with the skills to make a larger range of products when you have finished.

  • Throughout the course you will have three kit boxes delivered to your home containing all of the frames and materials to make:

    DROP IN SEAT DINING PAD

    Let’s kick things off with the basics and hit the ground running. Working with a sample frame for a drop in seat pad for a dining chair. you’ll be introduced to all the tools of the trade. You’ll get to grips with the all-important staple gun and upon completion of day one you’ll be able to confidently prep and upholster seat pads. The skills you acquire in Module 1 are not just limited to dining seats. They are transferable to simple footstools, giving you a product range from day one!

    CONTEMPORARY STOOL

    I designed this sleek and modern stool as a skill-packed powerhouse. Building on the skills from Module 1, we will master making and making and applying piping and sewing and applying a border; learning backtacking in the process.

    DEEP BUTTONED FOOTSTOOL

    You'll craft your own deep-buttoned stool. From prepping and buttoning to precise fabric measurements, button application, pleating, and finishing touches – you’ll cover it all.

    Plus all of the theory will be added to your online membership area to study at your own pace.

    FLUTED HEADBOARD

    Meet the first of two headboards – not just a piece of furniture, but a canvas for skill-building. Why headboards? Simple. They're a fantastic and accessible gateway to learning new skills, and let's face it – they're all the rage in interior design right now.

    Dive into the fluted style, and I'll walk you through some top-notch technical skills. And the best part? These skills are transferable, setting you up to conquer other fluting projects with ease.

    DRUM STOOL

    The Drum Stool is the perfect interior design piece! Perfect as a stool, coffee table or side table. We’ll focus on some serious sewing skills.

    SQUARE BUTTONED HEADBOARD

    Next up it’s the second of the two headboards. Whilst I’m teaching this as a headboard, square buttoning is a brilliantly versatile skill, which can be applied to sofas, chairs, footstools, benches and cushions!

    SEWN WINDOW BOX CUSHION

    This module is a sewing masterclass. Wondering why you should master this technique? Well, it's not just about chairs; think window seats, camper van and caravan cushions, outdoor seat pads – you name it! While we've dabbled in some basic sewing in previous modules, now it's time to up the ante.

  • This course is taught online.

    These videos are then uploaded to your online account.

  • The ten modules cover seven completed projects and three theory sessions including the following skills:

    ·         Working with Ultraflex (a sustainable foam alternative)

    ·         Webbing

    ·         Piping (sewn and non-sewn)

    ·         Deep buttoning (including a theory session on applying the technique)

    ·         Using backtack to create a blind seam

  • All of our studio courses are flexible and can be taken on Thursday, Friday or Saturday (availability dependent).

    Courses must be completed within 3 months of your first day.

  • Upon booking you will be granted access to our online account, where you will find lots of fabric information., as well as links to fabric houses you might like to consider getting your fabric from.

    In total you will require 7 metres of fabric.

  • Do I have to join live?

    The course goes out live each week, offering you the opportunity to join me and a community of like-minded people. This allows you to ask questions, as I demonstrate each and every step of the process. I use Zoom, which is a user-friendly and free platform. I use up to four different camera angles, so you never miss a snip or staple.

    For those who can’t or don’t want to join in real-time, don’t worry. Each session is recorded.

    When you enrol in one of my courses, you will gain access to your own personal account. Within your account you will find essential course information, such as Zoom joining information and shopping lists. The recorded sessions are uploaded to your membership area and you can enjoy unlimited access to these recordings. You can watch, pause, rewind as many times as needed to master the art of upholstery at your own pace.

    How long do I have access to the recordings?

    You will have unlimited lifelong access to the recordings in your online account!

    How do I access the recording?

    When you sign up to a course, you will create an account through the website. This is where you will find the Zoom joining information and any other relevant course information. This is also where you will find all the videos to watch on-demand.

    Do I need tools &materials to join this course?

    Yes, you will require a pneumatic staple gun and small compressor. You will also require a sewing machine for some of the modules. A decent domestic machine will do. Also a selection of hand tools. These is a downloadable shopping list in the ‘What You’ll Need’ section.

    What happens if I get stuck?

    I’m here to help! I offer daytime and evening one-on-one Zoom sessions if you need them. I also have a Facebook group, where you can benefit from support from fellow online students.

    Will I get the same experience online as I would in person?

    Yes—you’ll still see every detail thanks to multiple camera angles, and you’ll have the chance to ask questions live. Plus, you’ll have the added benefit of being able to pause, rewind, and re-watch the recordings.

    What do I need to get started?

    We’ll send you all the kits and frames you need for the seven modules, plus a shopping list for sundries like fabric. You’ll just need basic tools (we’ll guide you on what’s essential).
