  • 4 metres

Upon booking we will send a booking confirmation which will have loads of links to fabric houses you might like to consider getting your fabric from.

  • Where is the course?

Not just in any old location! Our studio is situated in Torr Vale Mill; a former cotton mill based in New Mills in the heart of the Peak District. It’ full of character and a perfect place to get creative.

Address: Torr Vale Mill, Torrvale Road, New Mills, Derbyshire. SK22 3HS

    When should I arrive?

Courses start at 10.00 so aim to arrive around 9.50 so you can have a brew and settle in.

What happens if I don’t quite finish?

Don’t worry, that’s the first thing. Everyone works at different speeds and if you run out of time you can add on extra days to finish your masterpiece.

How do I book my days?

You can either book through the website and we will be in touch with a list of available Thursdays, Fridays & Saturdays.

    Or

You can contact us beforehand and we will provide the availability upfront.

What if I need to change my day?

We get it, life happens. Providing you give u a bit of notice, you can change the date no problem.

Will I really get to use a staple gun?

Oh yes — and you’ll wonder how you ever lived without one. Don’t worry, we’ll show you how to handle it like a pro.

What will I go home with?

A finished piece you’ve made with your own hands — and the bragging rights to match.

Do I need to bring anything?

Just your fabric. We’ve got the tools, materials and know-how covered.

I’ve never upholstered before — is that OK?

Check the ‘who is it for"?'‘ guidance above but beginners are more than welcome. We’ll guide you every step of the way (and yes, you’ll surprise yourself).

    How big are the classes?

Don’t worry you won’t be lost in the crowd; we only take up to 3 people at anytime.

    Should I bring lunch?

We’ll take a break for lunch and you’re welcome to bring it with you. If you forget you can always wander over to the Torr Vale Tap.

    Can I park?

No need to worry about this, there is a large car park which is free to use. Once parked, just wander down the hill towards the mill and we are the first door on the right just after the car ports.

What happens to my project between visits?

We’ll store it for you, simple.

    What should I wear?

Comfy clothes you don’t mind getting a bit dusty, and closed-toe shoes. Think practical, not catwalk.

Will there be tea and biscuits?

Of course. Can you even upholster without them?

Can I carry on learning after this?
Definitely. We’ll show you your options, from more in-person days to joining us online for the next step in your upholstery journey.

    What are the teacher’s credentials?

Glad you asked! Anthony has worked in the upholstery industry for almost 30 years! For big name brands and independently. He opened the doors to Ministry of Upholstery in 2011, which went on to become the UK’s leading modern upholstery school. He has taught thousands of students and spawned many new careers and hobbies during his time.

TECHNIQUES COVERED

  • When it comes to arms, this is the one to master! Made up of three pieces; the arm, the facing and the piping, I’ll teach you how to template, cut, sew and attach this must-have technique.

  • Facings can be tricky and attaching them seamlessly, even trickier! Let me guide you through the entire process from measuring to cutting, attaching and pleating the arm. Then we will move on to creating the perfect facing, before attaching with facing clips.

  • More facing practice here but this time we’ll be completing the facing using our staple gun. The staples will then be masked by applying decorative nails.

  • Think of a classic Howard style arm and the simple perfection of the triple pleat.

  • Deep buttoning on a headboard or footstool is one thing, but being able to transfer that skill to the inside back of chairs is something I totally will demystify for you.

  • This is an advanced skill, which will enable you to work confidently with tartans, checks and stripes; ensuring that the lines carry through from one section of the chair to another seamlessly.

  • A must-have and very transferable skill. By perfecting your sewing skills on this project, you’ll be opening the door to many other items such as window seats, caravan and camper cushions an dmuch more.

  • The list doesn’t end here. This chair will cover all of the following:

    • Tailoring

    • Sewing

    • Seat Platform

    • Cutting Around Rails

    • Slip Stitching

    • Zig Zag Springs

    • Superloop Springs

    • Spring Clips

    • Foam Knowledge

    • Decorative Studding

    • Nail Backtack Strip

    • Ply Gripping

    • Applying Profile Roll

    • Using Backtack Strip

    • Feedback & Mentoring throughout the course

    • Working with different fabric types

    • Calculating fabric amounts
