What if you could learn the expert techniques to cover a wide range of projects from the comfort of your own home, with a structured plan, live guidance, and step-by-step mentoring? Imagine having one chair frame that teaches you multiple styles—a single project that gives you the skills to upholster countless designs in the future.
If you’re serious about leveling up your upholstery and want to gain the confidence to take on bigger, more challenging projects, then read on…
DO you want to be able to make all of these?
then here’s how
Take your upholstery skills to the next level with Techniques Chair, a 33-week online course designed to give you the confidence and expertise to upholster a wide range of armchairs and sofas. You’ll receive a wingback chair frame and learn how to upholster it in multiple styles, transforming each part using different techniques. One arm will be a scroll arm, the other a capped arm. One wing will be pleated, while the other features a studded facing. Along the way, you'll refine essential skills such as deep buttoning, slip- stitching, pattern matching, foam knowledge, spring systems, and box cushion making—everything you need to take on upholstery projects with a professional finish.
The course is delivered live each week, giving you real-time guidance and the chance to ask questions. Each session is then edited and uploaded to your online account, so you can watch and rewatch at your own pace. As the weeks progress, you will build up a library of invaluable reference material for all your future upholstery projects! You'll also receive 1:1 mentoring to help you progress, along with pre-course guidance on fabric choices and a full supplies shopping list. There are three ways to join dependent on whether you wish to receive the frame and sundries or simply use the course as a resource library. What are you waiting for? Come with me on this upholstery journey and I will have you upholstering chairs and sofas with confidence and professionalism!
I’m Anthony and I love making stuff! I’ve been making stuff now for over 28 years and it never gets boring. That thrill of using my hands to create something beautiful, which other people admire and even give me money for, is a buzz that never gets old!
Around 14 years ago I took a massive leap of faith and founded my own upholstery school. It quickly became the UK’s leading modern upholstery school, attracting students from around the world. Sharing my passion for making and teaching others to do the same is my life’s work.
In November 2019, I was diagnosed with MS, which has impacted my mobility. However, it hasn’t stopped me from doing what I love. Accessibility is incredibly important to me and teaching online allows anyone, anywhere to access high-quality upholstery education without barriers.
I don’t take myself too seriously—I enjoy a good laugh, often at my own expense. This approach makes my courses relaxed and light-hearted, creating a fun learning environment.
Outside of upholstery, I have an amazing wife, a wonderful daughter and an incredible dog (read the My Story section for more about them). When I’m not teaching, you’ll likely find me tinkering with my Land Rover Defender, which I’m currently converting into a campervan!
My philosophy? ‘Never, never, never give up!’”

HI!

TECHNIQUES COVERED
-
When it comes to arms, this is the one to master! Made up of three pieces; the arm, the facing and the piping, I’ll teach you how to template, cut, sew and attach this must-have technique.
-
Facings can be tricky and attaching them seamlessly, even trickier! Let me guide you through the entire process from measuring to cutting, attaching and pleating the arm. Then we will move on to creating the perfect facing, before attaching with facing clips.
-
More facing practice here but this time we’ll be completing the facing using our staple gun. The staples will then be masked by applying decorative nails.
-
Think of a classic Howard style arm and the simple perfection of the triple pleat.
-
Deep buttoning on a headboard or footstool is one thing, but being able to transfer that skill to the inside back of chairs is something I totally will demystify for you.
-
This is an advanced skill, which will enable you to work confidently with tartans, checks and stripes; ensuring that the lines carry through from one section of the chair to another seamlessly.
-
A must-have and very transferable skill. By perfecting your sewing skills on this project, you’ll be opening the door to many other items such as window seats, caravan and camper cushions an dmuch more.
-
The list doesn’t end here. This chair will cover all of the following:
Tailoring
